Hello and welcome to Simple Home Economics. Home Ec? Isn’t that an elective that was taught in high school in the 50’s? Yes! But managing your home is something that everyone does, whether they realize it or not. You pay your bills, buy groceries, feed your family, keep everyone clothed, but not everyone does it efficiently.
What is Home Economics? It is everything that NEEDS to be done in order for your home to run well. Home Ec includes cooking yes, but also managing the food budget and making sure the groceries arrive in time to cook the food and having a menu so you know what to buy. It includes maximizing the money that comes into your home (income) so that you can take care of the NEEDS and have some leftover for your WANTS.
In fact, that is exactly how I organize my budget: Needs and Wants. During my own personal finance journey I found that if I can take care of the needs efficiently (least amount of money and time spent on things I don’t enjoy) I will have more resources i.e. Time and Money to spend on the things I Want to do. Your Needs and Wants will be different than mine, and that is very important to keep in mind as we explore goals, budgets, menu planning, organization, vacations, outsourcing and more on this website.
